Here's what's really in the Gemini app today and which one to reach for.

The free plan gives you Gemini 3.6 Flash plus limited access to Gemini 3.1 Pro. Google AI Plus ($4.99/month) doubles your usage limits. Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) gives you meaningfully more access to 3.1 Pro, a 1 million token context window, and Deep Research. Google AI Ultra ($99.99 or $199.99/month) unlocks the highest limits along with Google's newest experimental features. The model everyone's waiting on, Gemini 3.5 Pro, is still in limited testing with partners and hasn't reached general availability yet.

Gemini 3.6 Flash: what free users get

Gemini 3.6 Flash launched July 21, 2026, replacing 3.5 Flash as the workhorse model behind the free tier. Google says it uses about 17% fewer output tokens than 3.5 Flash for the same task while improving on coding, computer use, and knowledge work benchmarks, and it's priced lower on the developer side too. For a free model, that's a real upgrade, not a token gesture.

Gemini 3.1 Pro: the model behind "Pro" in the app

When Google talks about giving paid users "more access to Pro," it means Gemini 3.1 Pro, the model currently doing the heavy lifting for longer, more complex requests: research reports, large document analysis, and reasoning-heavy tasks. It's the model Deep Research and the 1 million token context window on the Google AI Pro plan run on today. It's a strong model, but it's not Google's newest one, which matters for the next section.

Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite: built for speed at scale

Released the same day as 3.6 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite is built for high-throughput, latency-sensitive work: agentic search, document processing, and other jobs where speed matters more than depth. Google measured it at 350 output tokens per second, the fastest in the 3.5 lineup, and it's rolling out into Google Search as well as the Gemini API. Most everyday users won't pick this one directly, but it's likely running quietly behind features that feel instant.

Where's Gemini 3.5 Pro?

This is worth knowing if you've been expecting Google's true flagship: as of Google's own July 21, 2026 announcement, Gemini 3.5 Pro is still in limited testing with partners, not generally available. Google had targeted a broader launch around its May 2026 I/O conference and has slipped past that timeline. In the same announcement, Google said it has already started training runs for Gemini 4. In practice, the "Pro" experience most people get today is still 3.1 Pro, and that's likely to stay true for a while longer.

Usage limits and features shift often enough that it's worth checking Google's plans page directly before choosing a tier.

Bottom line

For casual, everyday use, the free plan and 3.6 Flash cover a lot of ground now that it's had a real upgrade. If you're hitting usage limits or need longer context and Deep Research regularly, Google AI Pro at $19.99/month is the natural next step, and it lands in the same general price range as ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro. Ultra is worth it mainly if you want Google's newest, most experimental features first, not for the core chat experience most people use day to day. And if you're planning a workflow around Gemini 3.5 Pro specifically, hold off. It isn't broadly available yet.
